Traditional Maharashtrian Chakolya Recipe | Comforting One-Pot Meal Chakolya | Varanfal | Dal Dhokli is a traditional Maharashtrian dish similar to Gujrati Dal Dhokli but with its unique regional touch.It’s a comforting and hearty one-pot meal where spiced wheat flour dumplings (dhokli) simmered in a sweet,tangy and mildly spicy lentil stew or lentil soup(dal).

Variations

Ingredients :

For Preparing Dal
  • ½ cup Toor Dal / तूर डाळ
  • ¼ cup Moong dal / मूंग डाळ
  • ¼ tsp Haldi / हळद
  • ¼ tsp Hing / हिंग
  • Water for cooking
For Tempering Dal
  • 1 tsp Jeera / जिरा
  • ½ tsp Mustard seeds / मोहरी
  • 4-5 Dry Red Chillies / सुकी लाल मिरची
  • Curry leaves / कडीपत्ता
  • 4-5 Green chillies / हिरवी मिरची
  • 1 tbsp Sliced Dry Coconut / सुक खोबरं
  • 6-7 Cloves of Garlic / लसून
  • 1 tsp Chilli Powder / लाल मिरची पावडर
  • 4-5 Pieces of Aamsul soaked in water / भिजवलेले आमसूल
  • 1 tbsp Grated Jaggery / गुळ
  • Salt to taste / मीठ
  • Freshly chopped Coriander / कोथिंबीर
  • Desi ghee for serving / गावठी तूप
  • Cooking Oil for tempering
For Preparing Dhokli
  • 1 cup Wheat flour / गव्हाचे पीठ
  • ¼ cup Besan / Chana dal flour / हरभरा डाळीचे पीठ
  • Pinch of Hing / हिंग
  • ¼ tsp Haldi / हळद
  • 1 tsp Red chilli powder / लाल मिरची पावडर
  • 1 tsp Carom seeds / ओवा
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp Cooking Oil

Step by step method of preparing Traditional Maharashtrian Chakolya Recipe | Comforting One-Pot Meal

For Preparing the Dal
  • Wash the toor dal & moong dal thoroughly and pressure cook with 2-3 cups of water,turmeric powder and a pinch of hing until the dal is soft and mushy.
  • This usually takes about 3-4 whistles.
  • Once cooked,mash the dal with a ladle or whisk until smooth.
For Tempering the Dal
  • Grind green chillies,sliced dry coconut & garlic to a fine paste.
  • In a large pot,heat the oil or ghee.
  • Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  • Once they splutter,add hing/asafoetida.
  • Next add turmeric powder,chilli powder to the tempering.
  • Add the green chilli-dry coconut-garlic paste and saute for another minute.
  • Add the mashed dal to the pot.
  • Add soaked kokum or amsul.
  • Next add grated jaggery.
  • Add salt & Mix well.
  • Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.
  • Bring it to a boil.
  • Let it simmer on low heat.
For Preparing the Dhokli :
  • Knead the Dough-In a mixing bowl,combine whole wheat flour,chickpea flour,turmeric powder,red chili powder,carom seeds, hing,salt and oil.
  • Add water little by little to form a semi-soft dough.
  • Knead it well.
  • Roll and Cut the Dhokli-Divide the dough into small portions.
  • Roll each portion into a thin circle (like a chapati).
  • Cut the rolled dough into diamond or square shapes using a knife or pizza cutter.
  • Add the dough pieces (dhokli) one by one to the simmering dal.
  • Stir gently to ensure they do not stick together.
  • Cook on medium heat for about 10-15 minutes or until the dhokli pieces are cooked through and soft.
  • Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Final Touch – Adjust the seasoning if needed.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander.
  • Your Chakolya or Dal dhokla or Varanfal is ready.
  • Serve it hot with enough drizzle of desi ghee.
